The future of RPGs will collide with the remaster of a ‘90s classic. Games that defined this generation get a sequel, including a certain rip-roaring shooter and that emotional survivor’s journey we’re still cut up about. And that’s just the start of what’s to come in 2020…
CD Projekt’s follow-up to The Witcher is an open-world RPG that gives you the punk fashion, cybernetic implants, and smart guns you need to survive Night City’s underworld. Take down the corporations from below and look breathtaking doing it – your in-game guide played by Keanu Reeves insists on it.
Final Fantasy VII Remake
The 1990s called and said you want an HD throwback to one of the most treasured RPGs ever made. Part one of this epic remake reintroduces huge-haired hero Cloud Strife and his pals as they survive the attack on the city of Midgar. Gather your party and get ready to fight in real-time battles so detailed you can see the sweat drip from Cloud’s nose.
Demons have invaded Earth and you’re a very angry man with a shotgun. Have fun! All the aggression of Doom 2016 has been amped up in this sequel with the addition of a grapple hook, arm blade, and flamethrower. Or you can switch sides and cause chaos as a demon in the new multiplayer modes.
The Last of Us Part II
Ellie is older and out for revenge against cultists in the second part of this post-apocalyptic masterpiece. Expect stunning mountain views, new terrifying mutants to sneak past, and to feel bad about killing guard dogs. Emotions will fly high as Ellie fights for what matters most to her.
Resident Evil 3
If you thought Resident Evil 2’s Tyrant was terrifying you haven’t seen anything yet. Resident Evil 3’s remake brings back the smarter, more powerful Nemesis as it hunts down Jill Valentine across the wreckage of Raccoon City. Need a break? Team up with three other players in the new multiplayer Resistance mode.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons
You get to build and decorate an entire tropical island this time around. A new crafting system ups the customisation options massively as you build a community of familiar faces. Need some help? Invite friends over to collaborate in local and online co-op.
Dying Light 2
Drop kicking a zombie in the face is the main draw of this sequel, obviously. But a renewed focus on choice-based storytelling directed by one of the best RPG writers in the business is nothing to scoff at. Expect both your parkour skills and people skills to be challenged this time around.
Ghost of Tsushima
Fight for the freedom of Japan as the last samurai on an island being invaded by the Mongols. Explore a stunning 13th century open world as you learn to duel against masters of combat. Learn the way of the Ghost or become one in this tough action-adventure.
Watch Dogs: Legion
Hack the city of London as you fight for a better future than the surveillance state. Recruit anyone from retired grannies to mouthy thugs and make use of their specialties to put together a varied team capable of the job. This third game in the series uses new tech to really take open-world gaming up a notch.
